What does Jesus Teach?
by Dylan Christensen
1. What does He teach about who God is?
1.1. “"Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 6:1 ESV God is sure to reward those who are righteous always and not just when it helps them.
1.2. “Pray then like this: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” Matthew 6:9 ESV God’s name is to be sacred and holy and should only be used in prayer.
1.3. “When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” Matthew 10:19-20 ESV God is someone who is always working through us to spread his word.
1.4. “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.” Matthew 10:29-30 ESV God is one who cares for us and will not let us die as He takes care of all.
1.5. “"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” Matthew 13:45-46 ESV God will do anything to find a steadfast believer.
1.6. “For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"” Matthew 23:39 ESV God goes to those who care about Him, not those that ignore Him.
2. What does He teach about what the Kingdom of God is like?
2.1. “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:12 ESV This shows us that those who are persecuted here on earth will be rewarded in heaven like the prophets who came before them.
2.2. “Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:19 ESV Those who teach God’s laws as they are meant to be taught will be blessed in the kingdom of Heaven.
2.3. “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts,” Matthew 10:8-9 ESV What God gives us is completely free and trying to make money off what He has done for us is just wrong.
2.4. “The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 13:41-42 ESV The Kingdom of Heaven will be entirely free of all evil, it will be burned in Hell.
2.5. “At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:1-4 ESV The kingdom of God will be full of humble people who show reverence to God.
2.6. “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Matthew 23:12 ESV Those who are humble and do what they should on earth will be rewarded in heaven and those who are rambunctious and sure to let everyone see them on earth will be humbled.
2.7. “"Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.' You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred?” Matthew 23:16-17 ESV I feel like this is alluding to the fact that you don’t get to take anything with you to heaven so God’s word is what is most important.
3. What does He teach about what life with God should be like?
3.1. “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 ESV We should show God’s light through our lives so that we can glorify Him as our Father.
3.2. “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,” Matthew 6:14 ESV This shows that God will treat us the same as we teach others.
3.3. “And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.” Matthew 10:14-15 ESV This shows us that if you rebuke God Life will not at all be easy for you and His wrath will be let upon you come the day off judgment.
3.4. “Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away.” Matthew 13:5-6 ESV Life with God should have root and should not be there just to be easily choked out.
3.5. “You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!” Matthew 23:24 ESV To have a healthy relationship with God we need to recognize our own faults and not those of others.
4. What does He teach about what life with neighbor should be like?
4.1. “"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” Matthew 5:7 ESV We should be merciful with our neighbors so that God is merciful with us.
4.2. “So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go.First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” Matthew 5:23-24 ESV Make sure you always have been reconciled with those around you and if you remember that there is wrong with you and someone be sure to fix it as soon as you can.
4.3. “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” Matthew 10:37 ESV We should love our neighbors but we cannot let it be more than we love the Lord otherwise we are not truly committed to Him.
4.4. “"Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me,” Matthew 18:5 ESV We need to accept other people into our lives to live with God.
4.5. “"See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 18:10 ESV Be good to those who are younger than them because you are no better than them.
4.6. “They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.” Matthew 23:4 ESV You should not be like the Pharisees and should do your own tasks instead of telling others to do them for you,
