1. Benchmark

1.1. Definition: given periodically throughout a school year to identify areas of growth. Typically, benchmarks are given based on a standard.

1.2. Example 1: Running Record, test a students fluency and decoding skills.

1.3. Example 2: Benchmark STARR, schools given STARR benchmarks in order to find gaps in knowledge and common misconceptions. The teacher can then target the misconceptions before the final STARR.

2. Performance Assessment

2.1. Definition: an alternative assessment that requires the student to complete a task or actions.

2.2. Example 1: Speech, in this type of a students inquires and/or applies knowledge to write and perform a speech.

2.3. Example 2: Research project, a students uses resources such as, notes, websites, journals, and textbooks to create project (poster, powerpoint, website)

3. Diagnostic Assessment

3.1. Definition: a pre-assessment that evaluates the students areas of refinement and reinforcement before instruction.

3.3. Example 2: Pre-assessements, a teacher conducts pre-assesments to gauge the knowledge level of students before a unit.

4. Summative Assessment

4.1. Definition: valuate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard such as the TEKS.

4.2. Example 1: Unit exams, evaluate the students knowledge of the content and TEKS within the chapter.

4.3. Example 2: STARR test, is a cumulative test that is comprised of all the TEKS standards.

5. Formative Assessment

5.1. Definition: a type of assessment used to find out where students are during and after a lesson. Then, a teacher uses the data to adjust instruction. Usually, on a daily basis.

5.2. Example 1: Observations, during the lesson on how the students perform during the We Do and You Do.

5.3. Example 2: Quiz, with multiple questions include true/false, multiple choice, and open ended.
