1. How do both, Heller and Vonnegut, utilize Characters and situations to portray deeper meanings of their work ?

1.1. A World War II veteran, POW survivor of the firebombing of Dresden, prospering optometrist, husband, and father. Billy Pilgrim is the protagonist of the novel who believes he has “come unstuck in time.” He walks through a door at one moment in his life and suddenly finds himself in another time and place. His fragmented experience of time structures the novel as short episodic vignettes and shows how the difficulty of recounting traumatic experiences can require unusual literary techniques. 1.2. The novel’s protagonist, Yossarian is a captain in the US Army Air Force who becomes tired of flying dangerous missions. At first he tries to get medically grounded on the basis of insanity, but Doc Daneeka, the group’s medic, argues that Yossarian cannot be insane if he wants to avoid death by getting out of having to fly. This is termed a Catch-22. Yossarian spends the remainder of the novel trying to combat the Catch-22 and convince the military brass, including Colonel Cathcart, the he should be sent home. Yossarian eventually refuses to fly missions and escapes the Army all together, fleeing to Sweden. (John “Yo-Yo” Yossarian Character Analysis in Catch-22 | LitCharts, 2020)
