In “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka, Gregor’s mutation symbolizes the transformation of Grete

1. Grete is a young, innocent and soft-spoken girl

1.1. “In the room on the left there was an embarrassing silence; in the room on the right, his sister began to sob”(10)

1.1.1. Gregor's inability of getting up in the morning scares everyone enough that Grete, his sister, starts to beg him to wake and attend his job.

1.2. “But, as if she felt sorry for her behavior, she immediately opened the door again and came in on tiptoe, as if she were visiting someone seriously ill or perhaps even a stranger”(22)

1.2.1. Grete, who is the only person who actually takes care of Gregor, still doesn't accept the situation completely. She is surprised and wants to help her brother but simultaneously wants to keep away form the bug.

1.2.2. Although she wants to keep a good distance from the bug, she still feels that she shouldn't be mean to it.

2. Grete commits to help her family including Gregor

2.1. “His sister immediately noticed the new entertainment Gregor had discovered for himself… and so she got it into her head to make it possible for Gregor to crawl on an altogether wider scale by taking out the furniture which stood in his way….”(30)

2.1.1. Grete's pity towards her brother compels her to give and fulfil his needs.

2.1.2. Moreover, Grete, who sits in her room all day playing violin, starts to help her parents by feeding Gregor and cleaning his room.

2.2. “his sister who had taken a job as a salesgirl, was learning shorthand and French in the evenings to attain a better position some time in the future.”(38)

2.2.1. The income of the family greatly reduced ever since Gregor's metamorphosis. Mr. and Mrs. Samsa find a job but still don't match Gregor's salary. Grete starts to take responsibility and takes the job of a salesperson, the same as Gregor.

2.2.2. Even though the entire family works, they still don't earn enough money to keep the family running; therefore, Grete takes classes to achieve a better position at her job. This commitment shows that she starts to work hard and grow.

3. Grete from a girl to a woman

3.1. “It has to go….You just have to try to get rid of the idea that it’s Gregor.”(49)

3.1.1. Grete, who loves her brother and tries to help him, says the thing that's on everyone's mind : The bug is not Gregor and that they should abandon it.

3.1.2. Furthermore, Grete has this conversation with her parents in front of Gregor displaying her feelings in a mature manner

3.2. “...she had blossomed into a good-looking, shapely girl.”(55)

3.2.1. The word "blossomed" describes the transformation from a young innocent girl to a strong and smart woman.
