2. Summary

2.1. Chapter 1:

2.1.1. On a dark and cold night at Laburnam Villa, the White family awaits a visitor. Mr. White and his son Herbert are playing chess while Mrs. White stands by the fire.

2.2. Chapter 2:

2.2.1. he reminds Morris of a story he was telling him recently about a strange monkey leg he acquired in India. He was supposedly bewitched by an old man to grant three men three wishes. Mr. White wants the leg, but Morris told him it causes trouble.

2.3. Chapter 3:

2.3.1. Morris throws the paw into the fire and Mr. White rescues it. he makes his first wish: he wants a sum of money. Herbert makes a sound on the piano and the leg moves. The next day, the whites receive word that Herbert was caught in the machinery at work and killed.

2.4. Chapter 4:

2.4.1. Whites are shaken by the way their wish came true and filled with grief at losing their only son. Mrs. White persuades Mr. White to wish Herbert to be alive again. Mr. White finds the leg and makes the wish; Suddenly, there is a silent, persistent knock on the door.

2.5. Chapter 5:

2.5.1. The blows get louder. Mrs. White wants to run to the door, frantic to let Herbert in, but Mr. White holds her back because he knows the wickedness of the paw and is afraid of what kind of "state" Herbert might be in. She breaks free and runs to the door, but can't reach the latch. Mr. White hurriedly looks for the leg.

2.6. Chapter 6:

2.6.1. Just as his wife gets a chair, climbs and slides the bolt, Mr. White finds the leg and makes his last wish. The blows stop suddenly. Mrs. White opens the door, but there is no one outside.
