Farm Worker's Lack of Rights da Mind Map: Farm Worker's Lack of Rights

1. because they're undocumented, they can be taken advantage of, as if they report bad work conditions, it can lead to them being "discovered" for being illegal. Therefore most of their lack of rights stems from being taken advantage of and not being able to report it.

2. Cause: They have bad working conditions (like no water/shade), being forced to work through bad air quality (fires) (npr.org)

2.1. a picture of farmworkers forced to continue to work even with wildfires going on

2.2. Cause news source: This discusses the bad work conditions California farm workers have to death with during the pandemic and wildfires.

3. Cause: they have little protection from hazardous pesticides (panna.org)

3.1. effect: bad health, as the pesticides create health problems including illness (panna.org)

3.1.1. solution: ban pesticide work, or have more regulations surrounding it, provide more protection for the workers using it (panna.org)

3.2. effect news source: This discusses and gives evidence to how fertilizer effects humans health

3.3. this picture shows the negative effects of pesticides not only on humans, but also to the environment and society

4. Cause: Many are immigrants and/or undocumented (nrdc.org)

4.1. effect: This means they'd lack access to health care as they don't have any insurance to cover it , making any health issues they come across be more life threatening. (nrdc.org)

5. Farm workers are the reason why we have fresh food to eat every day, however they're one of the main groups who face many injustices and receive little to no rights.

6. citations (mla)

7. This effect shows how many other causes and effects stems from their low pay, also meaning they live in poverty. Living in poverty leads to many other causes and effects for their lack of rights.

8. Cause: They're paid by "piece rate", or in other words they're paid based on how much they harvest (farmworkerjustice.org)

8.1. effect: sometimes their earnings don't even amount to minimum wage, & they can't take breaks as they try to maximize the amount of work they do, which could also lead to them getting injured. overall their little earnings means that many/most farm working families live under the poverty line. (farmworkerjustice.org)

8.1.1. Solution: write to legislations asking to ban piece-rate pay, make sure that farm workers are at least getting minimum wage (farmworkerjustice.org)

8.1.2. Solution news source: This talks about how they tried to make laws to insure that farmers will at least receive equal pay, however there was many loopholes through this.

8.1.3. this picture shows how little the farm workers make off the profits of the industry , partially due to piece rate

9. Cause: Labeled as "essential workers" but aren't receiving benefits for it. (latimes.com)

9.1. CST: 5 Dignity of work/ rights of workers ~ This cause (along with all the other causes) goes with this CST because it's about how to give dignity to workers they need to have rights, along with how workers need to have rights to do good work. This applies to this cause as we should be making sure that farm workers are receiving dignity (and other benefits) as they're very essential, however this isn't the case, as they aren't receiving the rights they need. However weather they're "essential" or not, all workers deserve dignity and rights, and right now specifically farm workers are getting none.

10. Cause: Lack of education for their children, the workers themselves also have low education levels (nfwm.org)

10.1. effect: this means that if their children have a hard time progressing in school, they won't be able to get a degree, therefore higher paying jobs, and then the family will get stuck in the cycle of low paid farmworkers (nfwm.org)

10.2. CST: 4 Preferential option for the poor & vulnerable~ This cause goes with this CST because it's about how society needs to put the poor and vulnerable first because they need the most help. This goes with this cause specifically because farm workers are part of the poor and vulnerable, so as a society we need to help them. Using this cause as an example, they can't afford education for their kids, so an 'option' our society can provide is programs such as free tutoring and donating school supplies and books.
