Parts of the Central and Peripheral Nervous System da Mind Map: Parts of the Central and Peripheral Nervous System

1. Central Nervous System (CNS)

1.1. consists of brain and spine

1.2. Brain (made of neural networks)

1.2.1. the brain stem (involuntary actions)

1.2.2. the cerebrum (opposite sides of body)

1.2.3. the cerebellum (motor skills)

1.2.4. the diencephalon (includes hypothalamus)

1.3. Spine

1.3.1. made of 31 segments with a pair of spinal nerves from each segment. they're also in charge of reflexes

1.3.2. simple spinal reflex

1.3.2.1. has a sensory neuron and a motor neuron

1.4. the brain and spine has 3 layers that protect them called the meninges: (1) dura mater (2) arachnoid (3) pia matter

2. Peripheral Nervous System

2.1. connects the CNS to the body

2.2. Autonomic

2.2.1. controls the internal organs' glands and muscles automatically. Examples include heartbeat and digestion

2.2.2. parasympathetic nervous system

2.2.2.1. opposite of sympathetic nervous system

2.2.2.2. examples of what it does: decreases heartbeat and lowers blood sugar

2.2.3. sympathetic nervous system

2.2.3.1. increases responsiveness

2.2.3.2. examples of what it does: increase heartbeat and slow digestion

2.3. Somatic

2.3.1. lets us have control over our skeletal muscles

3. Types of Neurons

3.1. Sensory Neurons

3.1.1. transmit info. from the sensory receptors to the brain and spinal cord

3.2. Motor Neurons

3.2.1. transmit information from the brain and spinal cord to muscles and glands

3.3. Interneurons

3.3.1. they're inside the brain and spinal cord and connects the sensory inputs and motor outputs.
