3.1. After the state election in 1876, Wade Hampton and the Redeemen had political power in SC.

4.1. Poor white farmers followed his leadership

4.1.1. Was a populist because he appealed to the values of the common people

4.1.1.1. Tillman ran on the platform of white superiority and lead a movement to fisenfranchise blacks.

5.1. South Carolina limited opportunities of blacks by passing the Jim Crow Laws which made segregation legal. .

6.1. The outcome made segregation legal.

6.1.1. The Court ruled that separate-but-equal satisfied the 14th Amendment for equal protection under the law.

6.1.1.1. Blacks in SC protested being taken out of public life, but violence, intimidation and lynchings silenced them.

7. New State Constitution of 1895

7.1. In 1895, Senator Tillman urged his followers to call for a new state constitution

7.1.1. Voters had to be able to read and understand the constitution

7.1.1.1. Had to pay a poll tax 6 months prior to the election
