Question 7: Looking Back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the finished media product?

1. Ideas
1.1. For my preliminary task my team thought of only one idea and it was a generic 'drug deal goes wrong' idea as we were planning our idea around the shots we wanted to use.
1.2. In preparation of our final film my team created three completely different thriller ideas and got feedback on them to help decide our favourite one however this idea was dropped as well as we didn't feel as if it was good enough and ended up with a more unique and intriguing idea.
1.3. In conclusion, we made our final idea a lot more developed and thought out than the idea for our preliminary task as a result of this the filming and editing processes became easier as we had a clear outline for what we were doing.
2. Planning
2.1. The planning for our preliminary task was very rushed all we did was get a basic outline of our idea and the script. We didn't plan out costumes and just wore what was on us and we didn't plan where we were filming so we lost time looking for a location.
2.2. When it came to planning our final film we thought it out a lot more carefully, we thought a lot about our main character, planning the actor, his costume, props, his backstory and even gave him a name which was never said on screen. We thought out what the story was and how each scene was going to go. We also planned a shooting schedule to help us know when to film ,found a suitable location before filming and checked the weather before hand.
2.3. The thought out planning majorly benefited our film because it gave us a confident idea on what we were doing.
3. Filming
3.1. During the creation of our preliminary task our filming skills were still at a beginners level, there was some awkward staring at the camera and some bad continuity. We sometimes did shot handheld which resulted in some shaky shots. Also our acting was not particularly good and took us out of the moment when rewatching
3.2. When filming our final film we decided to use a tripod and monopod for all our shots to avoid shaky cameras. We also decided that our film would include no dialogue and we would tell our story from what you see, not what you hear. Also by filming at a unique location we got to get a lot of good shots and managed to include more shots like an extreme wide shot as we had a large area to film on.
3.3. Overall, the difference in cinematography in our preliminary task compared to our final film is clearly noticeable and it is clear that we have allowed our film to benefit in looking more cinematic because of it.
4. Editing
4.1. When editing my preliminary task I rushed it and also was not very well adapted to editing videos. Many shots did not move smoothly into each other and the film also looked very bland and boring.
4.2. When the time came to edit our final film we spent a lot more time on editing as we now knew how important it was in the process. I learnt how to pick appropriate music to fit the scene, how to fade audio and video, add text to videos, make the cuts between shots feel smoother and how to colour grade our film to help it create an atmosphere.
4.3. To conclude, my skills in editing have improved greatly from the preliminary task to the final thriller. I have become far better in making the edits smooth and making my film appear more cinematic.
