1. DEFINITION -Interpersonal communication can be defined as the verbal and nonverbal interaction between two (or sometimes more than two) interdependent people.

2. PRINCIPLE OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

2.1. ICOM is a Transactional Process

2.1.1. -ICOM is a process -Elements are interdependent

2.2. ICOM serves a Variety of Purpose

2.2.1. -to learn -to relate -to influence -to play -to help

2.3. ICOM is Ambiguous

2.3.1. people communicated just enough to give the other person a pretty clear idea of what you meant.

2.4. Interpersonal Relationships May Be Symmetrical or Complementary

2.4.1. -in symmetrical relationships, the two individuals mirror each other's behaviors. -in complementary relationships, the two individuals engage in different behaviors.

2.5. ICOM Refers to Content and Relationship

2.5.1. Context aspect- to the behavioral response expected. Relationship aspect- to the relationship and how the communication is to be dealt.

2.6. ICOM is a Series of Punctuated Events

2.6.1. to tendency to devide communication transactions into sequences of stimuli and responses.

2.7. ICOM is Inevitable, Irreversible and Unrepeatable

2.7.1. a. ICOM is inevitable (cannot be prevented or avoided)

2.7.2. b. ICOM is Irreversible ( cannot be reversed)

2.7.3. c. ICOM is Unrepeatable ( cannot be repeated)

3. ELEMENTS OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

3.1. SOURCE-RECEIVER

3.1.1. ENCODING-DECODING -encoding is act of producing message like speaking. -decoding is act of understanding the message like listening.

3.1.2. INFORMERS -those who shared information and replied to others.

3.1.3. MEFORMERS -those who mainly gave out information about themselves.

3.1.4. INTERPERSONAL COMPETENCE -the ability to communicate effectively as source and receiver.

3.1.5. CODE SWITCHING -using different language style depending on the situation.

3.2. MESSAGES

3.2.1. SYNCHRONOUS COMMUNICATION -messages that are exchange in real time or messages that are sent and received at the same time.

3.2.2. ASYNCHRONOUS COMMUNICATION -do not take place in real time or messages that are sent at one time and received and perhaps responded at another time.

3.2.3. METAMESSAGES -that are about other message.

3.2.4. FEEDBACK MESSAGES -feedback tells the speaker what effect she/he us having on listeners.

3.2.5. FEEDFORWARD MESSAGES -reveals something about the message to come.

3.2.5.1. FUNCTIONS OF FEEDFORWARD MESSAGES -to open the channels of communication. -to preview the messages. -to disclaim -to altercase

3.3. CHANNELS

3.3.1. Face-to-face when you speak and listen (vocal-auditory channel)

3.3.2. Gesture and receive signals visually (gestural-visual channel)

3.3.3. Communicate through touch (cutaneous-tactile channel)

3.4. NOISE

3.4.1. PHYSICAL NOISE -interference that is external to both speaker & listener

3.4.2. PHYSIOLOGICAL NOISE -created by barriers within the sender or receiver

3.4.3. PSYCHOLOGICAL NOISE -mental interference in speaker or listener

3.4.4. SEMANTIC NOISE -when the speaker and listener have different meaning systems.

3.5. CONTEXT

3.5.1. PHYSICAL DIMENSION -concreate environment in which communication takes place.

3.5.2. TEMPORAL DIMENSION -to the time of day & moment

3.5.3. SOCIAL-PSYCHOLOGICAL DIMENSION -status relationship, roles and games that people play, norms of the society or group

3.5.4. CULTURAL DIMENSION -cultural beliefs and customs of the people communicating.

3.6. ETHICS

3.6.1. the study of good and bad, of right or wrong, of moral and immoral.
