Social Emotional Leaning and UDL Door Mind Map: Social Emotional Leaning and UDL

1. Lesson 1

1.1. Objective:By the end the students will be able to identify at least 4 emotions and the four zones of regulation (blue zone, red zone, yellow zone and green zone) that correspond with happy, sad, excited and angry

1.1.1. I will start off by teaching students different emotions and getting them to identify their own emotions. Per the UDL guidelines action and expression I would use multiple forms of media including pictures and videos of facial expressions to express different emotions and have students imitate the emotions to the best of their ability to engage in action

1.1.1.1. For UDL guidelines of representation, I will highlight critical features of the emotions (i.e. smiles and tears etc.). As an alternative to visuals I will have audio to assist the emotions to help maximize the auditory process and guide learning.

1.1.1.1.1. For the engagement aspect of the UDL guidelines I will facilitate personal coping skills and strategies for students to practice for when they want to get back into the 'green zone' or to be calm and happy. I will also encourage self reflection by asking students to reflect on their own emotions. To optimize choice I will ask students to draw a picture of how they feel at school and get them to reflect and pick which emotion they would like to demonstrate.

2. Lesson 2

2.1. Objective:The second lesson will be learning ways to calm the body. First we will start by reviewing what they learned about the different emotions and zones of regulation. Next, we will brainstorm and write down ideas about what are some ways to calm yourself down, i.e. drink water, ask for a hug, take a break etc. Then I will practice what a few of those would look like. To end I would read the students a book about having a calm body and how to use those techniques to calm down.

2.1.1. To provide multiple means of action and expression I will use media to show students clam breathing technique videos. I will also optimize goal setting by establishing in the beginning of the lesson and tell students to be mindful that they will need to choose a calm down technique to demonstrate at the end. I will also model the exercises for the students and talk them through it.

2.1.1.1. To provide multiple means of representation I will activate and supply background knowledge of the emotions we are learning about. I will also use the vocabulary in context and have picture cards for students to look at.

2.1.1.1.1. To provide multiple means of engagement I will be offering many options for self-regulation and facilitate personal coping skills.
