Sydney Door Mind Map: Sydney

1. Gifford Place

1.1. Sydney talked about how her community was when she was growing up "And Gifford Place used to be part of a historic Black community that sprang up after the panic, so I need to look into that too" ( Cole 113).

1.1.1. Sydney describes Gifford's place as a "Black Historic Community" before the gentrification. There was a culture thriving in Gifford place, but increased prices, people being forced out caused the culture to slowly fade away. Theo was one of the first people to move in since the gentrification happened and he could appreciate the beauty of what the community really was.

1.2. Theo, Sydney's new neighbor, has some positive thoughts about his new home when he says, "When I walk around Gifford Place, or even just watch from my window, I don’t feel crushed by the multi-car pileup of stupid decisions I’ve made. I feel like maybe this is a place I can belong, eventually" (Cole 37).

2. VerenTech

2.1. Verentech is going to come into Gifford's place-negatively affecting the people living there and some even said, "We have the lockdown on this neighborhood, and with VerenTech moving in? It’s gonna change everything.” He mimics an explosion with aloud kaboosh. “You ever see pictures of an atomic bomb drop? Not the mushroom cloud, but that energy rippling out, completely changing the landscape? That’s what VerenTech’s about to do here" (Cole 178).

2.1.1. Sydney is going to be the person who is going to rebel against Verentech because they are the reason for the gentrification. Someone described VerenTech as becoming a bomb that lands in Gifford Place and changes everything. Sydney finds out that Verentech is going to invest a lot like "pay off commissioners" to make sure they change Gifford Place.

2.2. Sydney didn't know much about VerenTech but was presented with some information when her friend said “VerenTech got some kind of special dispensation from the city. Someone BVT Realty gets and probably got it the same way—paying off these commissioners so they look the other way as they’re stamping contracts" (Cole 194).

3. Drea

3.1. Sydney's best friend is Drea, and it hurts her when she infers maybe when, "I stare at it for a long moment, trying to reconcile it with what I know of the company. Drea would never... She would never. She’ll explain when she gets back. Of course, there’s an explanation" (221).

3.1.1. Sydney and Drea had been friends for a while. It all went wrong when Drea stopped texting or calling Sydney. Sydney noticed that there was "Drea is typing" on the text but nothing was sent. This really tore apart Sydney and Drea's relationship as neighbors, but it got even worse when Sydney went into Drea's room and found out that Drea may have sold her apartment to Verentech..

3.2. When Sydney realized that everything was going wrong like Mr. Perkins being missing and, "Drea hasn’t responded to my texts and calls. I heard noise upstairs in her apartment a couple of nights ago, and when I went up there, there were bedbugs on her bed. A lot of them" (Cole 253).
