1.1. At Qing Dynasty, the number of people smoking opium increased

1.1.1. English merchants found that selling opium is profitable, so they smuggled the opium produced in India to China to sell

1.2. At the reign of Daoguang Emperor, because a great amount of opium was imported, which endangered people’s health and the finance of China

1.2.1. Daoguang Emperor sent Lin Zexu to Guangzhou to suppress( or ban on) opium.

1.3. Lin Zexu went to Guangzhou and demanded the foreign merchants to hand over the opium war

1.3.1. But Charles Elliot, the Cheif Superintendent of British Trade in China, refused to do so

1.4. As a result, the United Kingdom was forced to hand over more than 20,00 boxes of opium which were mainly destructed at Humen
