1. Effective Strategies elicit a productive, successful, confident, self-advocating mindset
1.1. Directly teaching and supporting a skill-set of self-regulation, self-calming, positive self-talk, and flexible thinking, then rewarding use of these skills.
1.2. Being proactive and preventive by asking "How are you doing?" as soon as you notice signs of frustration or apathy.
1.3. Having the student rate the assignment from 1-5 on a difficulty scale before starting and after completing the assignment, then re-evaluate what mindset they started with. Applying this rating to other similar assignments will help them to acknowledge that things aren't always as difficult as they seem.
2. Ineffective Strategies elicit fight, flight, or freeze instincts
2.1. Giving rewards and consequences based on consistent behavior.
2.2. Waiting to intervene until the student verbalizes their frustration to you.
2.3. Letting a student use negative self-talk saying an assignment is "too hard" or that they "hate writing".
