Activity 1: Differentiating Lesson Plans to Meet Student Needs. (3rd Grade History/Social Studies) Door Mind Map: Activity 1: Differentiating Lesson Plans to Meet Student Needs. (3rd Grade History/Social Studies)

1. Student 1

1.1. Interests

1.1.1. She loves movement and dance; is a kinesthetic learner.

1.1.2. Cheerleading and Ballet

1.2. Readiness Level

1.2.1. She can read and comprehend all instructions. However, she has recently been diagnosed with ADHD. Due to her diagnosis, she is unable to concentrate when seated to do classroom assignments that do not involve "hands on" tasks.

1.3. Strategies

1.3.1. "Moments in History"-The students will form small groups and act out specific moments in history. Each group will have a different topic. What they choose as their topic will be determined by the lesson being taught. I will provide them with the materials to make their own props and costumes. Each group has a minimum of 45 seconds and a maximum of 3 minutes to perform. This activity will be done every time I introduce a new lesson. The students will be allotted 30 minutes each day to create their props and costumes.

1.3.2. I will time all of Student 1's classroom assignments. This will help her to focus on her tasks, whether "hands on" or not. This strategy will be good for her because it will give her an incentive for staying focused. The incentive is to beat the clock. I will give her a fair amount of time to get her work done.

2. Student 2

2.1. Interests

2.1.1. He enjoys looking at picture books and watching cartoons. He gets ideas from them of things he can build with his hands using legos, blocks, paper, craft sticks, clay etc.

2.1.2. architecture and building

2.2. Readiness Level

2.2.1. Student 2 has a mild form of Asperger's Disorder. He receives home and school based treatment. His Dr. has cleared him to be in a regular inclusive classroom. Although he has gotten better he is still not very sociable. He does not like to attend school field trips. His parents and Dr. have asked that the school come up with something different for the student as they don't want him to be rushed into something and stunt his social growth.

2.3. Strategies

2.3.1. As a class, the students will build a colosseum when we have the lesson on the early civilization of Greece and Rome. They will split into groups of 2-3 to build their individual parts but come together as a whole to put the colosseum together. Student 2 will be able to work on his individual part alone. However, he will have to work with the class when it is time to put everyone's part together to build the colosseum.

2.3.2. The students will be going on a field trip to the National Museum of African American History and Culture Museum for Black History Month (February). Student 2 will not physically attend. Instead, he will go on a Virtual Field Trip via Google Hangouts. He will use his school issued iPad for this. One of the tour guides for the museum will conduct this virtual field trip with Student 2. An assistant teacher will be with Student 2 to assist him with any issues and/or questions that may arise.

3.1.1. He enjoys 3D graphics and virtual

3.2.1. Student 3 generally is a great student and he does good on my assignments. He has a difficult time paying attention to what I write on the board, which I use a lot in my classroom lessons. He often misses a few notes because of this.

3.3. Strategies

3.3.1. I will switch from using a regular chalk board to the interactive smart board. Because Student 3 is a visual learner and likes pictures and graphics the smart board will be a key in helping him stay focused on the lesson.
