Differentiating instruction Door Mind Map: Differentiating instruction

1. Objective: to identify and comment on the importance of minor characters in the novel "A Christmas Carol"

2. Action Plan

2.1. One on One: During independent work time, stop by her desk and make sure she has fully understood the objectives. Offer additional help as necessary.

2.2. Role Play: Have students perform a skit that highlights the role of characters other than Scrooge.

2.3. Compare and contrast the book with the movie. This will allow her to see the events. It may be beneficial to assign her the minor character of Fezziwig, as well, since his character is a dancer and a playful character with whom she may be able to identify.

3. Action plan

3.1. Pair work discussion: Matched with one of the students in the class that she is on friendly terms with. This will create a positive attitude towards her readiness to participate.

3.2. Presentations: Have students create a mindmap to show the change in Scrooge after interaction with the minor character of their choice. This will engage student 2 as she likes to talk and to show off in front of the class. Allowing students to make brief presentations has always engaged her.

3.3. Strict adherence to the classroom rules: while not really a change in the instruction, it is critical for this student to avoid any type of teasing (even playful) during class activities.

4. Student 1

4.1. Learning Profile: Kinesthetic / visual

4.2. Interests: Dance, Friends, Drama

4.3. Readiness: Started at the bottom of the class, but has made considerable progress over the last two months. She is willing to do the work, but needs help in knowing what and how to do it.

5. Student 2

5.1. Learning profile: Audio / visual

5.2. Interests: Reading, social studies, candy

5.3. Readiness: Generally excels at analyzing texts if she applies herself to the task. Whether or not she tries is usually dependent on external circumstances (i.e. relations with friends)
