STUDENT RETENTION Door Mind Map: STUDENT RETENTION

1. Universities activities to increase students retention can be divided into three major strands: 1.Changes in the structure of studies, 2.Changes in progression rules, 3.Changes in human support- both academic and well being.

2. Conclusion: Does your institution have a comprehensive, long term, well funded, student engagement and retention strategy? Faculty is on the front line of student retention

3. sometimes referred to as persistence, is of increasing importance to college administrators as they try to improve graduation rates

3.1. Student retention is one of the most important issues facing higher education today. With one-third of college students dropping out of school each year.

3.2. After identifying an institution's retention challenges and common risk factors for its students, it's time to develop a plan to address the issues uncovered

4. Audition your professors :Go to the first class or two and assess the professor. Ask yourself: Is the material presented clearly and forcefully? Does the class have a clear point? Is the professor at least moderately engaging? Is this someone I feel I can learn from? If the answer to any of these questions is "no," drop the class and find another

5. Adjust your attention span: But your professor is thinking in terms of a 50-minute lecture, divided into perhaps two or three segments. Retrain your attention span to process long—very long, it will seem—units of content (rather than zoning in and out as things strike you)
