5.3.1. is innovative

5.3.1.1. The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for innovative design. But innovative design always develops in tandem with innovative technology, and can never be an end in itself.

5.3.2. makes a product useful

5.3.2.1. A product is bought to be used. It has to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic. Good design emphasises the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it.

5.3.3. is aesthetic

5.3.3.1. The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our person and our well-being. But only well-executed objects can be beautiful.

5.3.4. makes a product understandable

5.3.4.1. It clarifies the product’s structure. Better still, it can make the product talk. At best, it is self-explanatory.

5.3.5. is unobtrusive

5.3.5.1. Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression.

5.3.6. is honest

5.3.6.1. It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.

5.3.7. is long-lasting

5.3.7.1. It avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years – even in today’s throwaway society.

5.3.8. IS THOROUGH, DOWN TO THE LAST DETAIL

5.3.8.1. Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the consumer.

5.3.9. ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY

5.3.9.1. Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimises physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product.

8.3.1.1.1. is rarely stationary. Rather, this is the person who ventures into the field to observe how people interact with products, services, and experiences in order to come up with new innovations

8.3.1.1.2. The Anthropologist is extremely good at reframing a problem in a new way, humanizing the scientific method to apply it to daily life. Anthropologists share such distinguishing characteristics as the wisdom to observe with a truly open mind; empathy; intuition; the ability to "see" things that have gone unnoticed; a tendency to keep running lists of innovative concepts worth emulating and problems that need solving; and a way of seeking inspiration in unusual places.

8.3.1.2.1. celebrates the process, not the tool, testing and retesting potential scenarios to make ideas tangible.
