3.1. RINGFORTS; were a circular bank of earth surronded by a trench. Inside the trench were houses built of wood with a thatched roof. Many ringsforts conteined an underground passage: the SOUTTERAIN

3.2. HILLFORTS; were ringforts built on top of hills, which offered greater protection to inhabitants

3.3. PROMONTORY FORTS; like Dùn Aengus were built on cliff-tops for addotional security

3.4. CANNÓGS; were built on an island in the middle of a lake for protection. They were surrounded by a wooden fence they offered great protection from potential attackers and from wild animals.

4.1. The Celts divided Ireland into 150 kingdoms called TUATH. Each had a RI (king).

5. THE CELTS TOOK GREAT CARE OF THEIR APPEARANCE

5.1. The Celts bleached their hair blonde using lime wash. Men often spiked it up to make themselves frightening. Men shaved their beards but had long moustaches

5.2. Men decorated their bodies with tattoos and paint made from berries when going to war

6. WHAT THEY WORE?

6.1. The Celts wore colourful clothes, often with checked patterns. They used dye from berries to colour their clothes. Men and women wore a long woollen cloak called a brat. This was tied at the neck with a broach or pin.

6.1.1. Under the brat rich men wore a knee-length tunic, called a LEINE. Poorer Celtic men wore trousers under the brat, called BRACAC.

6.1.2. Under the brat women wore a tunic to their ankles. A rich woman's tunic was embroidered with gold thread.

7. The Celts were:

7.1. FARMERS

7.1.1. They kept sheep and pigs, but cattle were the most important.

7.1.2. They grew wheat,barley and oats and also grew turnips and onions.

7.1.3. Celtic woman used a rotary quern to grind the grain into flour

7.2. BLACKSMITHS

7.2.1. They worked the metal and made beautiful jewels, called TORCS

7.3.1. They traded with Greeks and Phoenicians

8.1. The Celts were pagan.

8.2. Celtic priests were called DRUIDS

8.2.1. The Druids offered animal sacrifices to the gods

8.2.2. The druids were very important in Celtic society

8.2.3. The druids were also a judge, teacher and advisor to the king
