1. Summative
1.1. definition: are given periodically to determine at a particular point in time what students know and do not know.
1.1.1. example: standardized tests such as state assessments or district assessments
2. Performance
2.1. definition: an assessment that measures students' ability to apply the skills and knowledge learned from a unit of units of study. challenges students to use their higher-order thinking skills
2.1.1. Examples: presentations, portfolios
3. Diagnostic
3.1. definition: is a form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction.
3.1.1. example: unit pretest
4. Formative
4.1. definition: part of the instructional process. it provides the information needed to adjust teaching and learning while they are happening.
4.1.1. example: exit tickets, teacher observations.
5. Benchmark
5.1. definition: are assessments administered periodically throughout the school year, at special times during a curriculum sequence.
5.1.1. example: midterms, 6 weeks test.
