English Language Learners (ELL)

1. An ELL is any student in a provincially funded English language school whose first language is a language other than English, or is a variety of English that is significantly different from the variety used in Ontario schools.
1.1. Canadian born
1.2. Immigrated from another country
2. ELL Proficiency Levels: The five levels are based on proficiency in English; so a student with minimal proficiency would placed in level 1, while a student with near natural proficiency would be placed in level 5. These levels apply to ESL and ELD programs.

4. English as a Second Language (ESL): for students whose first language is other than English. They have opportunities to develop age-appropriate first language literacy skills.
5. English Literacy Development (ELD): for students whose first language is other then English and most often from countries in which their access to education has been minimal resulting in significant gaps in education.
