DEFENDING NORTH AMERICA by Mind Map: DEFENDING NORTH AMERICA

1. CANADA'S ACCEPTANCE OF NUCLEAR WEPONS IN 1963

1.1. FOR

1.1.1. Created a united front with USA, not only with NORAD; but any actions considered to be Anti-American would have been costly to international relations and trade.

1.1.2. Arrow project was too expensive and not effective with Canada's security needs. Bomarc missiles were a better option, but would not be effective without the use of nuclear heads.

1.1.3. Created some security for many Canadians, knowing that we had a working defense system against Soviet attacks. American Bomarc missles would have been placed at missile sites along the Canadian border, which would have destroyed any incoming Soviet bombers over vulnerable civilian living areas.

1.1.4. By moving missile sites to northern Canadian locations, any downed aircraft or missiles would be far away from populated areas.

1.2. AGAINST

1.2.1. Howard Green felt to accept nuclear weapons in Canada was hypocritical and against foreign policy, as our activeness with the United Nations were striving towards global disarmament. Many Canadians felt the same way.

1.2.2. Diefenbaker's Cabinet was very intrigued on the issue and spread an image that the Conservatives lacked solidarity. Due to the revolt on the issue, the government was forced to call an election, and was replaced with Lester B. Pearson's minority Liberal government.

1.2.3. Many feared this would result in contributing to global suicide.

1.2.4. People felt we were effectively destroying Canadian innovation for the convenience and supporting American industry.

2.1.3. Canada didn't want to be involved in United States policies and interests.

2.1.4. Allowing atomic weapons into Canada could cause disturbances with other nations.

2.2. AGAINST

2.2.1. The government should've supported the united states actions.

2.2.2. Caused a conflict and effected the relation between Canada and America.

2.2.3. The Canadian soldiers wouldn't have been prepared for a nuclear war.

2.2.4. It was too late to offer support to the states.

3. THE SCRAPPING OF THE ARVO ARROW

3.1. FOR

3.1.1. Canada its self could afford their own modernized weapons.

3.1.2. Wasn't significant enough to deter other countries with their aircraft industries.

3.1.3. If they had cancelled it would have made the soviet union see Canada not as a threat.

3.1.4. It needed a pilot which could have resulted in many deaths.

3.2. AGAINST

3.2.1. Would make Canada a technological leader.

3.2.2. It was the most advanced aircraft in the world.

3.2.3. Was very quick and efficient when being used in battle.

3.2.4. Politicians should have been more careful in investing and budgeting money instead of watching what other countries are doing like the US.
