Autonomy by Mind Map: Autonomy

1. Heteronomy-Opposite of Autonomy. Being ruled by someone else.

2. Punishment-Three Outcomes:

3. The second possible outcome of punishment is blind conformity. Some compliant children become total conformists. Conformity assures them of security and respectability.

4. The Third: Revolt, years after angelic behavior, decide that they are tired of pleasing parents and teachers.

5. Punishments Reinforce Children's heteronomy and prevent them from developing autonomy.

6. The first Outcome:The child who is punished will repeat the same act but will try to avoid being caught the next time. The pleasure that the act will bring will be worth the price.

7. Being Governed by Oneself

8. Allows children to make decesions for themselves

9. Moral Autonomy-Being governed and guided by your own beliefs and understandings.

10. To Develop Moral Autonomy-WE must refrain from using rewards and punishments

11. ENCOURAGE Children to construct moral values for themselves

12. Autonomy Is NOT complete freedom. It means taking relevant factors into account in determining the best course of action for all concerned.
