by Bella Campbell
1. Quadratic Function
1.1. Definition- one of the form f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c where a,b, and c are not equal to zero, and the graph of a quadratic function is called a parabola.
1.1.1. Example- y= (x-3)^2-2
2. Parabola
2.1. Definition- a symmetrical open plane curve formed by the intersection of a cone with a plane parallel to its side.
3. Vertex of a Parabola
3.1. Definition- the point where the parabola crosses it's axis of symmetry.
3.1.1. Example- (0,0) could be the vertex in a parabola.
4. Vertex Form
4.1. Definition- the vertex form of a quadratic function is f(x) = a(x – h)2 + k, where a, h, and k are constants.
5. Axis of Symmetry
5.1. Definition- the line through the vertex of a parabola that divides the parabola into two congruent halves.
6. Standard Form
6.1. Definition- the function f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c where a does not equal 0
6.1.1. Example- f(x) = 4(x-1)^2 + 9
7. Minimum Value
7.1. Definition- the minimum y-value at the vertex. Domain is all real numbers, and range is all values greater than or equal to the minimum.
8. Maximum Value
8.1. Definition- the maximum y-value at the vertex. Domain is all real numbers less than or equal to the maximum.
9. Absolute value of a complex number
9.1. Definition- the distance between the origin and the point in the complex plane
10. complex conjugate
10.1. Definition- each of two complex numbers having their real parts identical and their imaginary parts of equal magnitude but opposite sign.
11. Complex Number
11.1. Definition- a number that can be expressed in the form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers, and i is a solution of the equation x^2 = −1.
12. Imaginary Number
12.1. Definition- a number that is expressed in terms of the square root of a negative number
13. Zero of a Function
13.1. Definition- a member of the domain of such that vanishes at ; that is, is a solution of the equation.
14. Root of an Equation
14.1. Definition- The values of the variable that make the equation true.
15. Binomals
15.1. Definition- Quadratic expressions with two terms.
16. Trinomals
16.1. Definition- Quadratic expressions with three terms.
