STORAGE by Mind Map: STORAGE

1. Cloud storage -keeps info in servers, internet -Provides storage to computer/mobile device over the Internet servers

2. VOLATILE (RAM)

2.1. -contents disappear when power is removed. -eg: screen display -Thus, it is not a storage -Yet, it can be said as memory

3. UNVOLATILE (ROM)

3.1. -contents still available when power is removed -slower than RAM but is cheaper

4. HARD DRIVES (HDD)

4.1. EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

4.1.1. -Connected with cable to the USB port on device - Can be removed from device -eg: RAID (redundant array of independent disks)

4.2. HARD DISK DRIVE (HDD)

4.2.1. -contains platters that use magnetic particles to store data, instructions, and information -storage capacity determine by number of platters, composition of magnetic coating on platters, density and recording type (perpendicular/longitudinal)

4.3. SOLID STATE DRIVE (SSD)

4.3.1. -Flash memory storage device -Has own processor -Faster access times -Faster transfer rates -Quieter operation -More durable -Lighter weight -Less power consumption -Less heat generation -Longer life -Defragmentation not required

5. MAGNETIC STRIPE CARD

5.1. -has a magnetic stripe that contains information -eg: Credit/Debit card

6. SMART CARD

6.1. -stores data on an integrated circuit embedded in the card -TouchnGo

7. Storage medium -physical material to store data/app/info/program

7.1. capacity is counted in bytes -eg: KB, MB, GB

8. Storage device -hardware that records & retrieves items from storage medium

8.1. Included -writing (memory to storage) -Reading(storage to memory)

9. PORTABLE FLASH MEMORY STORAGE

9.1. -removable flash memory storage device that you insert and remove from a slot in a computer, mobile device, or card reader/writer -eg : pendrive, USB flash drive, memory card (SDHC, SDXC, miniSD, microSDHC)

10. OPTICAL DISCS

10.1. -flat, round, portable disc made of metal, plastic, and lacquer -Read/written by laser -commonly store items in a single track that spirals from center of disc to edge of disc

10.2. -CD-ROM/DVD-ROM (can read but can't write/erase) -CD-R/DVD-R/DVD+R (can write once but can't erase) -CD-RW/DVD-RW/DVD+RW (erasable multisession disc)

11. RFID tag

11.1. -consists of an antenna and a memory chip that contains the information to be transmitted via radio waves and can be read by RFID reader
