3.1. Great Britain's thirteen colonies declared independence to become the United States of America.
4. Why?
4.1. The British government decided to make the American colonies pay a large share of the war debt from the French and Indian War. ... Their defense of such a stockpile led to the shots fired at Lexington and Concord and the beginning of the Revolutionary War.

5.1. George Washington was declared commander in chief by the colonies.

11.2. During the war, a majority of the people living in the American colonies were "fence sitters" that did not take either side.
11.3. Colonists that remained loyal to Great Britain were known as loyalists.
11.4. Many of the slaves were able to escape during the chaos of the war. In South Carolina, 30% of the slaves either escaped, died, or migrated.
11.5. Approximately 25,000 patriots died during military service.
11.6. British soldiers were known as "redcoats" or "devils".
