1. Formative
1.1. Definition - Tests used to create, modify, or adjust instruction. Usually given before or throughout a unit to assess how much students are grasping.
1.1.1. Ex : Informal - Questioning
1.1.2. Ex : Formal - Pre-test
1.2. Tests used to form, modify, or adjust instruction. Usually given before a unit or throughout to assess how much students are grasping.
2. Interim/Benchmark
2.1. Definition - Often used mid way through the unit/year to check in and see if students are on track with their growth. Serve as a prediction for how students will do on upcoming tests.
2.1.1. Ex : MAP MOY, STAAR Interim
3. Summative
3.1. Definition - Used at the end of a unit to evaluate student learning and growth.
3.1.1. EX : End of Unit Projects, Unit Tests
4. Performance
4.1. Definition - Form of assessing students where they are required to perform a set of tasks in order to gain mastery of the objective, rather than answering questions on a written test. Higher order thinking happens here as it requires the students to apply their knowledge and skills.
4.1.1. Ex : Creating a project, taking part in a simulation (dissections/experiments etc.)
5. Diagnostic
5.1. Definition - Pre-assessments that determine what a student currently understands and what they need extra help with. Diagnostic tests provide good data for teachers to guide instruction and form RTI groups.
