1. Setting boundaries - you don't want students to disrespect you, similarly you don't want them to see you as their friend. You are their teacher.
2. Use of appropriate humour - don't make sarcastic, mean-spirited or otherwise innapropriate jokes.
3. Authoritive, not an authoritarian
4. Shutting down inappropriate behaviours - stopping bigoted comments of behaviour, this may be a students' only safe space
5. Remaining positive
6. Being fair but firm - allowing students to confide in you but not walk over you
7. Encouraging positive student behaviours, rewarding said behaviours with positive comments or other appropriate things.
8. Being Preventative not Curative - prevent issues rather than cure them
