Prevalence and Incidence of Chlamydia Pneumoniae Antibodies among the Healthy Elderly and Patients with COPD by Mind Map: Prevalence and Incidence of Chlamydia Pneumoniae Antibodies among the Healthy Elderly and Patients with COPD

1. Asthma

2. The high prevalence and incidence of COPD among urban older people of the Bangkok Metropolis has been reported and they increased with increasing age.

3. COPD is a common cause of disability in older patients in Thailand and worldwide.

4. Smoking

5. COPD

5.1. Chlamydia pneumoniae is a gram-negative, obligatory intracellular bacteria which can cause a variety of acute and chronic respiratory infections in humans.

6. Cause

6.1. Age

6.2. Chemical exposure

6.3. AAT deficiency

6.4. Chronic bronchitis

6.5. Pollution

7. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence and incidence of C. pneumoniae antibodies in elderly COPD patients compared to that in a healthy elderly control group.

8. Objective

9. Reserch result

9.1. Seroprevalence of C. pneumoniae IgG or IgA or IgM was detected in 96.1% of the COPD patients which was significantly higher than in the control group (75.6%) .

9.2. Prevalence of individual C. pneumoniae IgG, IgA and IgM in elderly COPD vs healthy control was 85.5% vs 66.4% (p < 0.01), 85.0% vs 51.1% (p < 0.01) and 3.9% vs 0%, respectively.

10. Concludtion

10.1. A high seroprevalence of C. pneumoniae antibodies in COPD elderly patients suggests that it plays a tangible role in causing acute or chronic persistent infections in COPD patients.
