MIRANDANET: Powering up English with ICT From the National Association for the Teaching of English (NATE) Michael Gove spoke when opening the BETT Show this morning about freeing up teachers to innovate. That’s fine - but where will the expertise come from? Streaming videos from ‘the best academy chains’ and universities - or interaction with colleagues and networking between schools of all kinds and across the globe? In its evidence to the consultation on new English National Curriculum, NATE’s ICT Committee declared that English teaching now includes a duty ‘to educate children in the critical study of media and electronic texts in order that they can become thoughtful creators and consumers of electronic communication. This is a natural extension of the work which English has always undertaken, whether it be the critical reading of a poem or of a newspaper article.’ Teachers at all levels are having to think about what it means to be literate in an increasingly multimodal world. Some recent examples of ways in which teachers are exploring how technology to enhance learning come in our case studies in using some innovative audio software to explore spoken English, that Cinderella of English.
