Exploiting mobile technologies in learning (11 Jan 12 )

Tom Rank; Chair, NATE ICT Committee

MIRANDANET: Powering up English with ICT From the National Association for the Teaching of English (NATE) Michael Gove spoke when opening the BETT Show this morning about freeing up teachers to innovate. That’s fine - but where will the expertise come from? Streaming videos from ‘the best academy chains’ and universities - or interaction with colleagues and networking between schools of all kinds and across the globe? In its evidence to the consultation on new English National Curriculum, NATE’s ICT Committee declared that English teaching now includes a duty ‘to educate children in the critical study of media and electronic texts in order that they can become thoughtful creators and consumers of electronic communication. This is a natural extension of the work which English has always undertaken, whether it be the critical reading of a poem or of a newspaper article.’ Teachers at all levels are having to think about what it means to be literate in an increasingly multimodal world. Some recent examples of ways in which teachers are exploring how technology to enhance learning come in our case studies in using some innovative audio software to explore spoken English, that Cinderella of English. The software is called Audio Tutor and the case studies are now online at: www.nate.org.uk/page/recording There is an area devoted to ICT in English on our website: www.nate.org.uk/ict . You find other case studies there as well as links to our policy documents and more. NATE’s annual conference is the highlight of the year for delegates. In June 2012 we’ll be in the historic city of York but we’ll be as up-to-date as ever – do join us! Tom Rank Chair, NATE ICT Committee: tom@literaryconnections.co.uk 11 January 2012

the challenge of sweeping away curriculum

#mmafa Sue Briggs - children should be able to use voice reg software by as a matter of course to develop literacy theokk theo kuechel

Bottom up - learners bring knowledge & competences etc into school

How can mobile learning help improve the home-school link

How to develop a common language to enable teachers and learners to talk to each other

Do mobile technologies encourage young boys to engage in literacy

How to get cross school fertilisation/collaboration

Creativity - how mobile technology can help pupils show big experiences from outside school, inside school; and then start to develop artefacts. An example? a pupil video of a new born baby

Achievement for all - 3 As

New framework

DfE commission

Originally SEN, now encompasses whole school improvement

Improvement in pupils seen acros the board

4 elements - school leadership, high quality T&L, Creating engagement, wider outcomes

So much to use eg mobile app instead of flash cards

Interaction, mobile devices - supporting literacy, improves linking with parents

What do we understand by learning - and what is not learning?

At risk leaners- what do we mean in relationship to achievement?

Literacy - what contribution can mobile devices make?

If we lose literacy, how can we map to personal literacy, mobile devices and multi-modality?

Strategic issues in mobile learning

Videos for learning and at risk learners

iPads for learning

Design your own learning

Planning mobile learning in schools

Importance of videos to learners

Bringing mobiles into classrooms

iPod Touch project

Wembley - economically deprived

iPods to give access to learning at home

22% EAL - weak English skills

25% SEN

Researching bespoke apps via Epic/GoMo

Access via wireless LAN

Funding ElF & voluntary parent contributions (parents very willing despite economic hardship)

Aim to increase 2 levels attainment, engagement, suvey by IoE, access to Free school meals

personalised learning, embedded ICT

Apps include translation, word games etc - real gains for EAL (English as an additional language)

Beginner EAL access group - apps for Shakespeare, Science - cells, filming, music

I like having iPod it helps my learning and understanding words (link to new Ofsted framework)

Pupils love apps to reinforce leson learning & learning at home

Makes learning fun

Pupils creating own apps

Pupil created content downloaded & used in lessons eg formative assessment. Very early in project

Innovative technology to develop language

nicknames for e-safety

mainly netbooks

producing films

gaming on smartphones

EAL students research & present information using storyboards

learning & developing range of language skills

students plan project

Summary

independence & responsibility

collaborative learning

share good prectice

technology focussed on supporting at risk learners

enhanced learning for most challenged

on demand, bottom up not top down

challenge of access & digital divide

It's not about technology but the learner. Not just at risk but all. Are there new ways, do we need to change.

Staying ahead of technology not running to catch up
