1. Defintions

1.1. ETHNICITY-is a term that describes shared culture—the practices, values, and beliefs of a group. This culture might include shared language, religion, and traditions, among other commonalities

1.1.1. What i have learned

1.1.1.1. When i though of ethnicity before i started this class i though of values and skin color, language. After reading and watching the videos of these modules I learned a big part of ethnicity is religion and traditions. For people of Mexican decent they are very religious, mostly catholic and they have a lot of traditions like Day of the Dead that define who they are.

1.2. Minority Group- is “any group of people who, because of their physical or cultural characteristics, are singled out from the others in the society in which they live for differential and unequal treatment, and who therefore regard themselves as objects of collective discrimination

1.3. STEROTYPES- are oversimplified generalizations about groups of people. Stereotypes can be based on race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation—almost any characteristic

1.4. PREJUDICE- refers to the beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and attitudes someone holds about a group. A prejudice is not based on experience; instead, it is a prejudgment, originating outside actual experience.

1.4.1. What i have learned

1.4.1.1. These ideas come from someone else's opinion because that person has never met or had an encounter with someone about that group. We see this a lot with people who go predominantly white private schools, because they just believe what there parents say or what they learned on television

1.5. INSTITUTIONAL RACISM- refers to the way in which racism is embedded in the fabric of society.

1.6. COLORISM- is another kind of prejudice, in which someone believes one type of skin tone is superior or inferior to another within a racial group.

1.7. DISCRIMINATION- consists of actions against a group of people. Discrimination can be based on age, religion, health

1.7.1. What i have learned

1.7.1.1. coming into this class i thought racism and discrimination were the same thing. However after this module i have come to realize. discrimination is acting on racist ideas. Like what we saw during reconstruction. We saw people treat people of color horribly just because they thought they were lower then them

1.8. RACIAL STEERING- in which real estate agents direct prospective homeowners toward or away from certain neighborhoods based on their race. Racist attitudes and beliefs are often more insidious and harder to pin down than specific racist practices.

1.9. WHITE PRIVILEGE-, which is the benefits people receive simply by being part of the dominant group.

1.9.1. What i have learned

1.9.1.1. People who are Caucasian get more chance and opportunities just because they are white. In my case i saw it a lot in my high school, being a predominately white school the students who were white would get extra benefits from teachers, As a teacher we have to give everyone an equal opportunity regardless of race.

1.10. RACISM-Racism is the belief that personality, behavior and morals can be traced back to race, and the belief that one race is superior to another.

1.10.1. What i have learned

1.10.1.1. It's more about thinking about someone differently. Like for example looking as someone who is Asian and thinking they are smart that is racsim .
