4. Interim/Benchmark

4.1. This is a type of testing that is done periodically throughout the year. Interim or benchmark assessments give little to no feedback to the students and is used to assess student knowledge before giving end of the year standardized tests.

4.2. Examples: 6 week testing, 9 week testing, chapter tests, benchmark assessment.

5. Formative

5.1. The process of gathering evidence about where student understanding is and adjusting instruction to achieve learning goals.

5.2. Examples: Exit tickets, group discussions, journal entries, four corners, think-pair-share, observations.

6. Summative

6.1. Summative assessments are used to mark the ending of a big chunk of learning material. Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning, done usually at the end of a unit. This is a formally given test and is usually weighted pretty heavily.

6.2. Examples include: standardized testing, final examples, final projects/presentations

7. Performance

7.1. Performance assessments are types of assessments that require students to perform a task (or do something) rather than choose an answer. This is assessing a students ability to be able to apply their knowledge and create rather than just recall.

7.2. Examples would include: presentations, portfolios, projects, debates, journal entries.

8. Diagnostic

8.1. Diagnostic assessment is a form of pre-assessment that gives the teacher some background knowledge of what students know, what their strengths and weaknesses are and what skills they have. This is an assessment that is done before starting a unit and is used to help teacher plan the lesson based on what prior knowledge students have.

8.2. Examples include: KWL charts, pre-tests, running records.
