Westminster Woods Student Senior Interaction Day Corn Hole Tournament by Mind Map: Westminster Woods Student Senior Interaction Day Corn Hole Tournament

1. Participation

1.1. The event would be composed of students from local High Schools (Nease, Bartram, Creekside, etc.) and the Senior Citizens who reside at the Westminster Woods Center

1.2. Sometime in the first quarter of the 2020-2021 school year to allow ample time for planning and marketing; the event itself would probably take place over the course of 6 hours (we would provide a lunch break and would cater food from 12-1); we would also have a snack table which is open to all for the duration of the event

1.3. The event can be marketed through social media platforms such as Instagram and SignUp Geniuses can be shared with students through various platforms (such as posting SignUp links to the National Honors Society Schoology to expose the event to students who would be interested in participating); we can offer students service hours for participating to give them an incentive to participate; students would probably need

1.4. Ideally, we would have around 40 teams competing (each team would be composed of one student and one senior)

2. Need/Purpose

2.1. The benefits go the residents of Westminister Woods and the organization as we are donating to them

2.2. This is Indirect as we are donating to the organization as a whole

2.3. The need is great as the organization is running out of funds to support their current members as less and less people are buying into the area

2.4. The need is partially filled by others, however, not enough people are aware of the need to donate. In this way, we are making people aware of the cause and donating funds to keep the organization running.

3. Project Outcomes

3.1. The effect is not monetarily big as we may not raise that much money. However, the emotional impact is tremendous as when the older generation meets and interacts with the younger generation, they feel happy.

3.1.1. We need help from the volunteers to volunteer to bring goods and help out with the event. Moreover, we need help from the local kids in IB as well as in the community in order to pay the entry fee of $5 to participate in the event as this would be our only revenue stream.

3.1.2. The goals would be to make the residents happy, raise $200 and have over 40 residents and younger members

3.2. LO: Challenge and skills: To raise the money from sponsors and get volunteers to actually get them to pay-in.

3.3. LO 2: Initiative and Planning: We have to plan out the different stages of the project including how we would market it to the public, how we would obtain sponsorships and how we would initiate the cornhole tournament.

3.4. LO 3: Working collaboratively with others: We have to work amongst ourselves and with the community to gain volunteers and donations for the event.

3.5. LO 4: Showing perservance and commitment: We have to take our own roles and market this to the community and solve problems that come along the way such as how we would execute the event and problems in obtaining sponsorships.

3.6. The end result is that we would have an event that would allow the elderly to interact with the young generation and we meet our monetary goal of $200.

3.6.1. To get there we would have to first, plan the event. Then market the event on social media platforms and obtain sponsorships from local companies for the prizes and free catering of the food. After that we have to set up sign-up geniuses for hours to volunteer and obtaining food in exchange for hours. After that we would initiate the event and collect the money at the door for safekeeping. After that we would initiate the event and clean up the event and then donate the money back to Westminister Woods.

3.6.2. It looks like a tournament of corn-hole where the residents are paired with an younger resident who payed a fee. There would be food and drinks for refreshments throughout the event. They would play cornhole for 10 minutes with a scoring system and then the winner of the tournament would receive a $100 gift-card which will be donated from the sponsor.

4. Skills and Knowledge

4.1. We are learning interaction skills with the elderly and learning how to plan and initiate a CAS Project

4.2. Research: There are 47 million senior citizens (65 and older) in the Unites States of America. There are 42 million (10-19) adolescents in the United States; however, the generational divide between these senior citizens and teenagers is growing as the frequency of interactions between the two age groups steadily decreases

4.2.1. There are 398 residents at the Westminster Woods at Julington Creek where we will be hosting the event.

4.2.2. Less residents are buying in each year

4.3. There are some skills that can be improved and learned from our event. To begin, people unfamiliar with the game (especially adolescents) can be familiarized with the corn hole game. Furthermore, communication skills can be developed, when our teenagers will interact with their senior citizen partners.

4.4. Infro: This day will be a way to raise money for the Westminster Woods at Julington Creek. We will also be encouraging the interaction of adolescents and the senior community by having mixed teams in the tournament. All the proceeds will be donated to the Westminster Woods.

5. CAS Strands

5.1. Creativity: We have to plan and initiate a CAS project and come up with ways to raise money for the event. Furthermore, we will have to organize the marketing aspect of our event. By planning and providing for the entire day, we will encounter many problems and solutions. We will also have to plan out the entire day, creating a schedule for food, MCs, and bracket organization. This will require us to come up with innovative solutions to make it enticing for potential participants in the day.

5.2. Activity: This project will encompass the Activity Strand due to the fact that our day will be orientated around a corn hole tournament. Our two communities (the senior and younger generation) will be able to bond over a physical activity. They will partake in a corn hole tournament, which includes the physical activity of throwing, and hand eye coordination. Not only will our communities come together, but they will practice a healthy lifestyle together.

5.3. Service: Our project will be heavily intertwined with service. This is because we will be not only interacting two communities (that fo not interact as much as they should), but we will be raising money to donate to the Westminster Woods non profit organization. This way, we will successfully execute an event day that will not only allow interaction, but raise money that will affect the senior citizens and make their lives more enjoyable.
