"The Bet" - Irony Assignment by Mind Map: "The Bet" - Irony Assignment

1. The banker being jealous of the lawyer’s young age when he is released.

1.1. Verbal Irony

1.1.1. When the banker addresses his appearance along with his age, he says no one would get that he was only forty years old with the way he looks so it was a form of sarcasm and verbal irony.

2. The banker’s lack of money in the end of the story when he initially started with tons of money.

2.1. Situational Irony

2.1.1. I didn't expect the banker to gamble all of his money away while the lawyer was imprisoned, I more so expected him to save up his money just in case he lost the two million pounds seeing as he's a banker.

3. The lawyer initially thought life imprisonment wouldn’t be a punishment.

3.1. Dramatic Irony

3.1.1. The readers know that the bet won't necessarily turn into a complete good ending/thing to happen to the lawyer from the get-go when the banker bets two million pounds on it happening and he nonchalantly agrees to it.

4. The banker shows up to kill the lawyer before his imprisonment term is up, but instead finds out the lawyer planned to leave before on his own free will waiving the banker of his financial obligation.

4.1. Situational Irony

4.1.1. Not only was the banker planning to kill the lawyer unexpected but the prisoner planning to leave before the agreed time was also unexpected, making this yet another prime example of situational irony.
