YOO eighth grade geography floods. Not that in-depth, just generally explaining the different types of flood.
1. River Floods
1.1. River floods occur on the floodplain
1.1.1. The floodplain consists of the river and low-lying land.
1.2. Occur when water in the river rises and overflows its banks ( levees)
1.2.1. Causes of river overflows
1.2.1.1. Heavy Rain
1.2.1.2. Snowmelt
1.2.1.3. Dam Failure
1.3. Examples of river floods
1.3.1. Mississippi River Flood in in 2011
1.3.2. Flood in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia 2011
2. Flash Floods
2.1. Quick rise in water levels
2.1.1. Occurs suddenly and lasts for a short period of time e.g. a few hours
2.2. Caused by:
2.2.1. Heavy Rainfall
2.2.2. Coastal and River Floods
2.3. Examples:
2.3.1. Flash Flood Orchard 2011
2.3.2. Commonwealth Ave 2013
2.3.3. Many other eastern areas in Singapore 2018
3. Coastal Floods
3.1. Occur in areas along the coast. (Especially river mouths and low-lying coastal land)
3.2. Caused by :
3.2.1. Intense Storms
3.2.1.1. Tropical storms
3.2.1.2. Tropical Cyclones
3.2.1.2.1. Also known as Hurricanes and Typhoons
3.3. Examples:
3.3.1. Super Typhoon Haiyan Philippines 2013
3.3.2. Japan Tsunami 2011
