Analogue v.s Digital

The key difference between analogue and digital technologies is that analogue technologies record waveforms as they are, while digital technologies convert analogue waveforms into sets of numbers, recording the numbers instead. When played back, the numbers are converted into a voltage stream that approximates the original analogue wave. Using today’s digital devices, original studio analogue recordings can be cleaned up, re-mastered, and distributed as digital files that sound much better.

Disadvantages of digital technology...

1) Devices are constantly translating and coding, so there isn't the same rich sound quality as with analoge. 2) Digital technology is still relatively expensive. 3) Digital technology makes piracy easy; Illegal downloading from the internet is a frequent problem within the music and film industry, caused by easy access from the internet. 4) It is very hard to find reliable sources on the internet e.g Wikipedia is like an open blog; people can publish any information they want on certain topics, so some information you read may be inaccurate and untrustworthy. 5) Over reliance on technology makes society lazy as we rely on the internet or machines to do almost everything for us; this may result in less skilled workers in the future. 6) The 3D heyday is now thought to be over with a backlash against stereoscopic film. This is due to complaints of the higher cost, ridiculous 3D glasses, headache you get after watching the film, and reviews that the stereoscopic view doesn't look any different from 2D.

Advantages of digital technology...

1) The speed in distribution and playing is a lot faster, so it is less time consuming. 2) The cost of digital is not as expensive in the long term as analogue. 3) There is less maintainance needed with digital technology as it's durable ( it is supposedly 'indestructable'). 4) The sound quality is high and consistent. 5) The internet gives people the freedom to view almost anything e.g new films and music videos. 6) There is large storage capacity within digital technology e.g. the ability to store thousands of songs on an ipod. 7) Internet search engines, such as Google, makes researching much quicker and easier with no cost, so you can gain valuable knowledge from internet sources. 8) In terms of business, the internet is very useful for marketing campaigns and also cooperating/working with clients in different countries. 9) Digital recordings can be copied and shared easily between many different users. 10) Digital technology makes film-making become more accessible to the average person, as they don't have to have the backing of a big distribution company or a large amount of money - they can download their videos on to Youtube.
