Homer's The Odyssey/The Hero's Journey

1. Art: Students will illustrate their myth and create a drawing based on their hero and what is happening with them.
2. History: Students will learn about Greek history including Greek Gods and Goddesses, as well as the Trojan War.
3. Literature: Students will read a few chapters of Homer's The Odyssey and discuss the themes and ideas in each story.
4. Vocabulary: Students will discuss terms such as hubris, myth, legend, The Hero's Journey.
5. Geography: Students will learn about where the chapters of The Odyssey take place and view a map of what Greece looked like at that time. They will also trace the path Odysseus takes on his journey.
6. Writing: Students will create their own hero and create a story for their hero using the structure of the Hero's Journey.
7. Technology: Students will use the computer to type the final draft of their myth and practice using the word processing tools.
8. Alternative media: Students will connect to the myth by watching sections from modern day interpretations such as O Brother Where Art Thou.
