1. Characteristics of a short story

1.1. -a short story can be read in one sitting -a short story involves characters in conflict -a short story has few characters - a short story has a single plot line -the purpose of a short story is to impart to the reader a message about life

2.1. The protagonist is the main character of the story, the one with whom the reader identifies. This person is not necessary “good”.

2.2. The antagonist is the force in opposition of the protagonist; this person may not be “bad” or “evil”, but he/she opposes the protagonist in a significant way

3.1. Rrefers to who is telling or narrating a story. A story can be told in three different ways: first person, second person, and third person. Writers use point of view to express the personal emotions of either themselves or their characters

6.5. Atmosphere o What feeling is created at the beginning of the story? o Is it bright and cheerful or dark and frightening?

7. Plot it is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story.

7.1. Falling Action - tension eases; events show the results of how the main character begins to resolve the conflict

7.2. Exposition -- introduction; characters, setting and conflict (problem) are introduced

7.3. Inciting Force -An incident of great importance to the central character, one compelling him or her to act.

7.4. Rising Action -events that occur as result of central conflict

7.5. Climax--the most intense part of the story, physically or emotionally

7.6. Denouement - This is the final outcome or untangling of events in the story.h
