Facts about the Amazon

1. The Amazon covers over 9 countries - The French Ghana, Brazil,
2. In 4 square miles there are 1500 flowering plants, 400 species of birds, 150 species of butterflies and 750 species of trees
3. The Amazon has been given the name the lungs of the world because the world relies on the Amazon for the carbon dioxide that it removes
4. Trees soak up the water to help erosion of the land
5. Every minute, an area the size of a football pitch is cut down. if we let this happen, there will be no rainforests left in 100 years
6. There are 7 billion people on the planet and humans can't survive without food. Trees are cut and burnt down to make way for farming
7. Animals and plants may lose their lives if the trees are cut down
8. It creates 20% of the worlds oxygen
9. The Amazon is home to 86 billion tonnes of carbon
10. 100's of prescription drugs are made from resources from the Amazon
11. Faster pace of climate change if we lose the Amazon
12. Dry season is between July & October
13. Burning the wood releases carbon monoxide
