1. Purpose

1.1. The purpose of this process is to evaluate the needs of the student and determine what, if any, aids are required to enhance learning.

2. STEP 1: Referral

2.1. Referral procedures may varry

2.2. A student can be referred by a family member, teacher, doctor, or other involved parties.

3. STEP 2: Conducting AT Assessment

3.1. Direct Observation includes spending time observing the student in multiple settings and recording comments.

3.2. Interviews may be conducted with the student, parents, teachers, physicians and other professionsls. These may be formal or informal.

3.3. Formal assessments are predetermined assessments given to the student that may give more insight to their particular special need.

4. STEP 3: Individualized Education Program Team

4.1. The IEP team meets to decide what assistive technology, if any, would best support the student. An IEP plan is develped for the student.

4.2. During this time the recommended assistive technology should be acquired and used by the student on a trial basis.

5. STEP 4: Implementation of AT Device

5.1. The assistive technology device is officially purchased and provided for the student to utilize.

5.2. The student is trained to properly use the device in multiple settings.

5.3. Teachers and parents work closely with the special education teacher and assistive technology specialist to promote student learning through the aid of the device.
