1. What is it?

1.1. Theft is the taking of another person's property without that person's permission or consent

1.2. Other terms that could relate to theft are burglary, embezzlement, larceny, looting, robbery, shoplifting and fraud

1.3. Someone who carries out an act of or makes a career of theft is known as a thief.

2. Types of theft

2.1. Shop lifting

2.1.1. The criminal action of stealing goods from a shop while pretending to be a customer.

2.2. Identity theft

2.2.1. The fraudulent acquisition and use of a person's private identifying information, usually for financial gain.

2.3. Fraud

2.3.1. A person or thing intended to deceive others, typically by unjustifiably claiming or being credited with accomplishments or qualities.

2.4. Auto theft

2.4.1. Motor vehicle theft, sometimes referred to as grand theft auto by the media and police department

2.5. Robbery

2.5.1. The felonious taking of personal property from someone using force or the threat of force.

4. How bad is it?

4.1. Robberies rose in 2007 to 17,988 from 17,284 in 2006 but remains lower than recorded in the early 2000s.

4.2. The proportion of robberies in 2007 involving a weapon (43%) was similar to that in 2006 (44%).
