1. Past perfect is used for actions that happen before another action.

1.1. Ex: The dog had died before we arrived.

2. Past continuous is used with while and when.

2.1. Ex: I was cooking while she was watching TV.

3. Past simple is used with when.

3.1. Ex: He had washed the dishes when I arrived.
