Feudalism

1. King
1.1. Lived at the top in the kingdom.
1.2. Maintained all classes below such as nobles and held the "political sword" controlling all political issues while pope controlled all religious.
1.3. Ruled over the entire land and provinces.
2. Peasants/Serfs
2.1. Lived on Manor of a Lord. The manor could be from 100 acres to 1000 acres.
2.2. Worked on the Manor and provided Grain for the lord for no actual pay. Preformed tasks to maintain estate. Nearly produced everything for the lord.
2.3. Were unable to leave the land they were born on.
3. Clergy
3.1. Lived on the manor was the village priest. At the local church.
3.2. Duties were to administer the necessary sacraments with regularity and consistency. Source of secular and ecclesiastical pronouncements.
3.3. Had wealth, power, and prestige. Lived a life of luxury.
4. Knights
4.1. Lived on the manor of a Noble and served them. Obtained land from lord known as fief. Wealth from fiefs allowed them to dedicate life as knight.
4.2. Protect the weak and poor. Encouraged to display the virtues of chivalry. Began training at age 7, 14 squire, 21 knight.
4.3. Free in his person and his possessions. The limitation he had though was military obligation to his lord.
5. Noble
5.1. Head of manor which ranged from 100 - 1000 acres.
5.2. Controlled manor and people living on manor as well as knights on their land. Had to look over their own land
5.3. Lord of all those people who settled on his land. When member of nobility came to possession of property he gained rule of land and people. Noble woman could inherit estate.
6. Pope
6.1. Lived like royalty, high class.
6.2. Was head of the church. Ran church and maintained religion among people.
6.3. Held "spiritual sword".Was authority of Clergy. Was able to excommunicate or banishment from church. Could use the interdict against king.
