1. LOOKS LIKE

1.1. Old Father

1.1.1. "Atticus is real old, but I wouldn't care if he couldn't do anything- I wouldn't care if he couldn't do a blessed thing" - Pg 107

1.1.1.1. Atticus is a lot older than most other fathers and this quality doesn't affect the children but makes Atticus self-conscious.

1.2. Eyesight

1.2.1. "He wore glasses. He was nearly blind in his left eye, and said left eyes were the tribal curse of the Finches. Whenever he wanted to see somehting well, he turned his head and looked from his right eye" - Pg 97

1.2.1.1. Atticus has got bad eyesight, especially in his left eye. Because of this, he has to wear glasses and tilts his head if he needs to examine something in detail.

2. BELIEFS & VALUES

2.1. Blacks aren't inferior

2.1.1. "Alexandra, Calpurnia's not leaving this house until she wants to... She's a faithful member of this family and you'll simply have to accept thing the way they are" -Page 149

2.1.1.1. Having a black women working for the Finch family does not concern Atticus the slightest. Moreover, Atticus respects what Calpurnia does for the family and strongly accepts her ways of caring for his children.

2.2. Don't be judgemental

2.2.1. "Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them" Pg 307 "You never really understand a person until you . . . climb into his skin and walk around in it." - Pg 31

2.2.1.1. Atticus has the belief that you shouldn't be judgemental and judge a book by its cover. He shows this in the first quote when talking about how he believed that Boo wasn't a bad person and that most people are nice people if you get to meet them.

2.3. All humans are equal

2.3.1. "Thomas Jefferson once said that all men were created equal... in our courts all men are created equal" - Pg 223/224

2.3.1.1. Atticus believes that all men are created equal and no one should be discriminated against just because of their skin colour. He also believes that black people shouldn't be treated the way there are being treated because they are still human and they are still equal.

3. HOW OTHERS SEE HIM OR HER...

3.1. 'Nigger Lover'

3.1.1. "I guess it ain't your fault if Uncle Atticus is a nigger-lover besides, but I'm here to tell you it certainly does mortify the rest of the family" - Pg 89

3.1.1.1. People call Atticus a 'nigger lover' since he doesn't look down on black people like the rest of the community, but mainly because he is defending Tom Robinson at his trial.

3.2. Great Shooter

3.2.1. "Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time"-Pg106

3.2.1.1. Atticus was the best shooter in all of Maycomb when he was younger. People respected him and were envious of him.

4. ACTS LIKE

4.1. Sober

4.1.1. "Atticus doesn't drink whisky...He never drunk a drop in his life - nome, yes he did. He said he drank some one time and didn't like it." - Pg 49

4.1.1.1. This proves that Atticus doesn't drink and that he is civilised, reliable and respected, unlike, for example, Bob Ewell who is the complete opposite.

4.2. Calm and controlled

4.2.1. "...Mr Ewell approached him, cursed him, spat on him, and threatened to kill him... Atticus didn't bat an eye , jut took out his hankerchief and whiped his face and stood there and let Mr Ewell call him names"page 237

4.2.1.1. Atticus is able to keep calm in such situations and it says a lot about he's personality. Atticus is well tempered and he knows not to start more problems with the already-aggravated Bob Ewell.

4.3. Selfless

4.3.1. "He had to take it out on somebody and I'd rather it be me than that houseful of children out there." - Pg 238

4.3.1.1. This shows that Atticus, although the children belong to Bob, he still doesn't want them to get hurt by him and he'd rather put himself in harms way then the children. This shows how selfless Atticus is.

5. MOTIVATED BY

5.1. Justice

5.1.1. "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win." - Pg 82

5.1.1.1. Even though Atticus knew that he wasn't going to win the Tom Robinson case, he still tried his best to win. He wanted to see justice towards black people.

5.2. Dislike for Prejudice

5.2.1. "In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins." - Pg 240

5.2.1.1. When Atticus explains about all the inequality between blacks and whites, we learn that he despises the common view that is portrayed of black people. He hates how people look down on black people and he is the least prejudice adult in Maycomb. This drives him to defend black people and treat them equally.

6. TEXTUAL ISSUES OR CONCERNS LINKED TO THIS CHARACTER

6.1. Bullying

6.1.1. "He had announced in the school yard the day before that Scout Finch's daddy defended niggers. I denied it, but told Jem." - Pg 81

6.1.1.1. Atticus is worried about his children getting into fights with the other children at school because he is defending Tom Robinson at his trial. He wants them to just ignore all the other kids giving them a hard time.

6.2. Being Judgemental

6.2.1. "Stop tormenting that man" - Pg 53

6.2.1.1. Atticus doesn't want his kids to play games with Boo Radley since he knows that Boo has been through a lot and doesn't want nor deserve any of the things that the kids are doing to him.

6.3. Violence

6.3.1. "You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down" - Pg 82

6.3.1.1. The main trait of Scout that Atticus is worried about is her temper. This is displayed when Atticus asks her not to fight any of the other children. When Scout does other things such as cursing, Atticus isn't as assertive which shows that her temper is something that really concerns him.
