1. Parenting

1.1. Strict parenting practices

1.1.1. In a world of chaos, obedience can bring some, however minimal, domestic stability

1.1.2. Some of the punishment and child regulation practices used, can easily be interpreted as child abuse to an outsider who does not live in this poverty stricken environment.

1.2. Mothers rely on kin relationships heavily

1.2.1. Families are large and mothers are responsible for many children (can reach double digit numbers in regards to the number of children in a household)

1.2.1.1. Not all children are blood related

1.2.2. To survive and properly account for, protect, and feed these children, family helping family is crucial to functionality within the domestic domain.

1.3. Mothers expect help from the older children to help raise the younger children

1.4. Mothers are constantly batting the lure of their children into the "street life" and into gang activity

1.4.1. Another justification for strict rule by a mother.

2. Youth Education and Employment

2.1. Mothers stress the importance of school and obedience at a very young ager

2.2. Children are expected to take on adult responsibilities at a very young age

2.2.1. Poor children have difficulty maintaining academic obligations because of their domestic responsibilities outside the classroom.

2.2.2. A 14 year old may be considered an adult capable of making autonomous decisions

2.3. Free time may result in a form of "Hustling", whether it`s gang related or it`s standing in a parking lot trying to help people carry baggage to their cars.

2.3.1. Trying to relieve some financial pressure in their domestic spheres

2.3.1.1. A loss of childhood expeiriance for the poor youth, as understood in the United States form.

3. Community Gangs

3.1. Seen as necessary within the community

3.1.1. The gang in control of the region brings stability to an ever present possibility of violence

3.1.1.1. There are cyclic periods of peace and violence, depending on the control by a regional gang or a lack of control by a regional gang.

3.1.1.2. Power struggle

3.2. Take on the role of "local sheriff"

3.2.1. Take on multiple roles within public and domestic spheres

3.2.1.1. Will intervene on spouse issues, financial disputes, and illegal activity

3.3. Regional Control

3.3.1. Different gangs for different regions

3.4. More respected, in some instances, than the actual police

3.5. Revenge cycles

3.5.1. A violent act results in another violent act in retaliation.....continued revenge

4. Favela Community

4.1. Shack

4.1.1. constructed by whatever materials available at any given time(including cardboard)

4.2. Space must be strategicly divided within the family and within the community

4.2.1. Sleeping on the floor with multiple people can result in a grid pattern, head to toe because space is so valuable.

4.2.2. Privacy is at a minimum in these conditions.

4.3. Gang activity

4.3.1. civilians are careful about when and how long they are outside their favela, considering their fear of imminent violence

5. Police

5.1. Corrupt

5.1.1. Use their authority for personal gain

5.2. Death Squads

5.2.1. Gun down street children or presumed "street children"

5.2.2. The upper and middle class feel torn about the poor children.

5.2.2.1. They want to help these kids, but they also fear them

5.3. Feared by the public

5.3.1. Families worry about their children being gunned down by the police.

5.3.2. Some engage in revenge cycles while off duty or pursue suspects while off duty.

5.3.2.1. "Police Bandits"

5.3.2.1.1. Civilians do not know if they are Bandits, Police, or Police Bandits

5.3.3. Families worry about police Vs. gang shootouts.
