1. Gangs

1.1. Gloria's son Pedro Paulo a leader in a drug trafficking gang. Pedro's father did not know he died, let alone was part of a gang.

1.1.1. Pedro's father cried upon hearing of his death, yet as a child he was never around, nor did he ever help Gloria with him.

1.1.1.1. Gloria, on the other hand, stated she had "no more tears left to weep" over Pedro who was always in trouble.

1.2. Street Children are seen as criminals by some, and innocent by others.

1.2.1. Recruited for dealing drugs, among other activities by gang members.

1.3. Gangs in Rio also act as mediators.

2. Rio

2.1. Middle and upper classes discuss crime often. This in turn scares them.

2.1.1. These classes have little exposure to crime.

2.1.2. It is often the poorest who experience high crime.

3. Childhood

3.1. Pedro grew up around honest working people. Gloria's job is seen as slavery, he found humiliating, and no advancement.

3.2. Gloria tough on her children. Contributing factor to downfall?

3.3. Gloria's children finding odd jobs. Wanting more than Gloria (i.e. apprenticeship at mechanic)

4. Economics

4.1. Many gang members come from families with low wage jobs (i.e. Gloria and Pedro Paulo.

4.2. Brazilian Gov. Statics. Monthly per capita income for whit male 6.3 times min. wage; white women, 3.6 times min. wage; 2.9 for black men, and 1.7 for black women.

4.3. Poor automatically guilty of criminal activity
