Topic: First fleet and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people

1. AusVELS links: At Level 6, students understand the ‘experiences of Australian democracy and citizenship, including the status and rights of Aboriginal people and/or Torres Strait Islanders, migrants, women, and children (ACHHK114) (VCAA 2013).
2. At this standard students recognise ‘the lack of citizenship rights for Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in Australia, illustrated by their early classification as flora and fauna, controls on movement and residence, the forcible removal of children from their families leading to the Stolen Generations, and poor pay and working conditions’ (VCCA 2013).
3. Learning outcome: Students will recognise the impact of Australia’s colonisation on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people
4. Overview: Year 6 students will explore the conflicts Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people endured during the early settlement of Australia, including the Stolen Generation, no rights and citizenship and the harsh working conditions.
5. Essential question 1: How did the arrival of the first fleet impact on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people (the first Australians)?
6. Learning outcome: Students will investigate and identify the significant events that improved the lives of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
7. AusVELS links: In Level 6, students work towards ‘describing the significance of the 1962 right to vote federally and the 1967 referendum’ (VCCA 2013).
8. Overview: Year 6 students will explore and research significant events including the 1967 referendum, equal pay rights, and the National Sorry Day.
