4. Overview: Year 6 students will explore the conflicts Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people endured during the early settlement of Australia, including the Stolen Generation, no rights and citizenship and the harsh working conditions.

5. Essential question 1: How did the arrival of the first fleet impact on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people (the first Australians)?

6. Learning outcome: Students will investigate and identify the significant events that improved the lives of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

7. AusVELS links: In Level 6, students work towards ‘describing the significance of the 1962 right to vote federally and the 1967 referendum’ (VCCA 2013).

8. Overview: Year 6 students will explore and research significant events including the 1967 referendum, equal pay rights, and the National Sorry Day.
