1. Resources:
2. Simulation case study: (prebriefing) MB is a 23 year old female who just delivered an 8 lb healthy baby girl. She is a G1 P1. She had an uncomplicated pregnancy. She had the baby approximately 1 hour ago via C section due to the baby being breech. Baby has been breastfeeding well the last hour.
2.1. MB is being assessed as part of her recovery. She is bleeding heavily and her blood pressure is dropping She is feeling faint and turns pale.
2.1.1. Students should recognize this as a postpartum hemorrhage and act quickly to assess the patient and determine the cause of bleeding. Students should attempt to stop the bleeding according to what they learned during lecture.
2.1.1.1. Students will be evaluated based on their performance during simulation. A debriefing will take place post simulation and a short summary will be required by students to describe what they learned, what went right, what went wrong and what happened during the simulation.
3. Introduction/Prebriefing: the purpose of this simulation is for students to understand the difference between normal postpartum bleeding and a postpartum hemorrhage.
3.1. Students will be presented with a lecture on postpartum care including postpartum bleeding, postpartum hemorrhage and how to respond to a postpartum hemorrhage.
4. Learning objectives:
4.1. The student will be able to identify the difference between typical postpartum bleeding and postpartum hemorrhage by the end of the simulation.
4.1.1. The student will be able to identify clinical features of a postpartum hemorrhage by the end of the simulation.
4.1.1.1. The student will be able to apply clinical strategies to stop or prevent a postpartum hemorrhage by the end of the simulation.
5. PowerPoint Lecture prior to simulation will contain:
5.1. Definition of postpartum: what is considered postpartum
5.2. What is normal bleeding post delivery?
5.3. Primary and secondary post partum hemorrhage
5.4. Causes of postpartum hemorrhage
5.5. Clinical presentation of postpartum hemorrhage
5.6. Treatment of postpartum hemorrhage
5.7. Patient education for prevention and treatment at home of postpartum hemorrhage
6. Practice: lectures will include questions within the lecture for students to answer to make sure they understand the basic concepts of the content that is being taught.
6.1. Pre simulation quiz
6.1.1. Evaluation during simulation based on rubric to assess the patient, identify abnormal bleeding, and appropriately respond to active hemorrhage.
6.1.1.1. Post simulation summary written by student based on what happened, what went right, what went wrong, and what they learned.
