Technology by Mind Map: Technology

1. Need for New Technologies

1.1. Innovation: New technologies are required to cater to new human wants and needs with new issues. Efficiency: Technologies enhance human performance and standard in doing different activities in life by easing the way they are done. Adaptation: Romantic love and marriage do not last indefinitely; it has to evolve with society and new age brings new technologies to assist this change. Examples: Modern examples include the invention of the wheel and fire which show that technology is still required in the society today.

2. Initial Thoughts → Updated Thoughts

2.1. Before: At first, when I had to think about the term technology, the first definition that came to my mind was the extent of advanced and complicated tools utilized in our day to day activities such as smart phones, laptops and other modern equipment. Somehow the impression was created that technology was all about the newest products that could simplify our existence. After: However, having a look at the material, which is contained in the ‘Technology’ module, I discovered that technology is not only the devices. It is more so the extent to which knowledge is used to analyze, and/or find solutions to perceived challenges and transform them. Technology can be a hammer or a computer or even the World Wide Web or even a nuclear power plant. More than the physical things that are tangible it is moreover about the processes, techniques, and even knowledge that is involved in it. Connection: Therefore, the knowledge grew from perceiving technology as those gizmos to realizing that technology is a large area that encompasses all aspects of our existence. This change is important because it helps me get a perspective on technology to not only view it as a set of exciting gadgets enjoyed in the present, but as something embedded deeply in society and culture and changing it everyday.

3. New Definition → Need for New Technologies

3.1. New Definition: Thus, although I thought that the technology is a progressive set of tools that enables people to perform certain tasks, it is actually much more than that. Rather it is not only the tool that matters but the information, the procedures and communication that go in to make that tool an effective one. That is the definition of technology, progressing with the application of knowledge to create solutions for day to day challenges in society. Why We Need New Technologies:Why We Need New Technologies: Since technology is quite an umbrella or an all-encompassing entity, there is always something newer that we need to come up with. There are always issues that arise and new requirements that need to be tackled and without new technologies we would not be able to do so. For example, try to imagine how the progress has accelerated even in the last few years with things such as renewable resources, new medical discoveries or even the means of communication. This is a wake up call we should keep on working hard to produce new technologies that will respond to such changes for the improvements of our world. Connection: This is why innovation is so crucial, technology is broad and complex in its applications today. The more we are in a position to positivize the actual meaning of what technology is all about, the more reasons there would be to continue to look for the next innovations. There is always a need for improvement and creativity to be able to overcome the growing complexity of the society. The argument is not that new gadgets are to be made, but that there has to be a path, a new way of doing things, solving problems, and making the world a better place to be.

4. Before the module

4.1. I thought technology is just limited to just electronic devices like phone , laptops etc.

4.2. I connected technology with modern devices

5. After the module

5.1. Most people have now come to realize technology as the use of knowledge.

5.2. Includes not just devices but also tools, processes, systems, and techniques.

5.3. A broader understanding that technology encompasses both physical artifacts and the knowledge behind them.

6. Complexity (Thomas P. Hughes)

6.1. Technology is not a smooth entity but has ha hly a rough texture and a lot of information and matter may be contradictory.

6.2. In some contexts it can be defined in a number of words and in other it has different meaning entirely.

7. Human Interaction (Isman, 2012)

7.1. Not as simple as involving both human beings and machines; rather, it involves a connection between such people and things.

7.2. It is the way of using the knowledge and tools to facilitate the functioning and to make changes in the environment.

8. Historical Perspective:

8.1. Prior to the 1930s the world ‘technology’ was related to terms such as ‘useful arts’, ‘manufacturing.

8.2. The understanding of the concept of technology has changed with time and is not only limited to hardware but also includes software and system of one kind or the other. Human Interaction (Isman, 2012)
