1. What Is Fixation?
1.1. A fixation is a persistent focus on an earlier psychosexual stage
1.2. Until this conflict is resolved, the individual will remain stuck in this stage.
2. Oral Stage (Birth to 2 years)
2.1. During this stage the ID dominates
2.2. the mouth is the primary source of pleasure.
2.2.1. Sucessfully making it through this stage results in:
2.2.1.1. Developing Trust
2.2.1.2. Optomistic Personality
2.2.2. Fixation at this stage results in:
2.2.2.1. Aggression
2.2.2.2. Pessimism
2.2.2.3. Distrust
2.3. For survival, a baby instinctively sucks.
3. Anal Stage (2-3 Years)
3.1. Focus is on potty training
3.2. Id impulse to release a bowel movement is interupted by external reality - ego
3.2.1. Fixation at this stage may result in:
3.2.1.1. The child becoming a hoardrer/
3.2.1.2. The child may become stingey
3.2.1.3. The child may become overly neat and obsessed with time keeping.
3.2.2. Eg. The parennts becoming overly strict in terms of timing and cleanliness.
3.3. Through societal pressure, ie. parents, the child must learn to control their bowel movements
3.3.1. Successful completiom of this stage results in the child:
3.3.1.1. Gaining a sense of independence
3.3.1.2. Gaining a sense of confidence
4. Phallic Stage (4-5 Years)
4.1. Pleasure derived from the genitals
4.1.1. An abnormal family set up can lead to an unusual relationship with the child's mother or father resulting in:
4.1.1.1. Vanity
4.1.1.2. Self-Obssession
4.1.1.3. Feelings of inferiority
4.1.1.4. Feelings of Inadequacy
4.1.1.5. Feelings of envy.
4.1.2. Conversely, the child will have:
4.1.2.1. More balanced life view
4.1.2.2. More confidence.
4.2. Oedipus Complex: Unconscious desire of a boy for his mother, and the desire to replace his father.
5. The Oedipus Complex
5.1. Oedipus was born to King Laius and Queen Jocasta of Thebes
5.1.1. Start here and go anti-clockwise
5.2. Laius wished to defy the prophecy that his son would kill him, so he sent a servant to leave Oedipus on a mountainside to die.
5.3. On the way to Thebes, Oedipus quarrelled with and killed a stranger.
5.4. When he arrived at Thebes, the city was at the mercy of a Sphinx
5.5. Years later, to end a plague on Thebes, Oedipus searched to find whoever killed Laius and discovered he was responsible.
5.6. Jocasta, after realising she had married her own son and her husband's murderer, hung herself.
5.7. Oedipus then took two pins from her dress and blinded himself with them.
5.8. The servant took pity on the baby and brought the baby to King Polybusand and Queen Merope to raise as their own.
5.9. Oedipus learned from the Oracle of Delphi that he would kill his father and marry his mother, unaware of his true parents.
5.9.1. Thought he was destined to kill Polybus and marry Merope
5.9.2. Left for Thebes
5.10. Oedipus defeated the Sphinx and was given the dead king's throne and wife as a reward.
5.10.1. Unaware that Jocasta was his mother.
